From Fence Line to Frame: Giving New Life to Rustic Barbed Wire

As an avid outdoorsman, I’ve always enjoyed hiking over many different landscapes. One of my favorite discoveries on a hiking journey was when I stumbled across a roll of rusty barbed wire.

You wouldn’t think something as harsh as barbed wire could become a piece of art, but that’s where the magic of rustic style comes in. I started collecting strands I found on my hikes  — and I began to see the potential. Each coil carries history. It might have kept in cattle a hundred years ago, or marked the edge of a pioneer’s land. That kind of character can’t be manufactured.

Eventually, I started incorporating this wire into my picture frames. I’ve been building rustic frames for years, usually from reclaimed barnwood, but adding barbed wire gave them a whole new level of authenticity. When paired with weathered wood, it tells a story — a little wild, a little weathered, and completely one-of-a-kind.

The best part? Each frame becomes more than just a way to display a photo — it becomes a piece of the landscape, a relic of the outdoors. It’s also been fun creating other desert shapes out of barbed wire - like our cactus and cowboy hat.

So next time you’re out in the wild and stumble across some old barbed wire half-buried in the grass, don’t just step over it. Consider where it’s been, what it’s seen — and maybe how it might look wrapped around a frame that tells your own story.
