Fixing Blemishes in Weathered Wood

Do you have a favorite rustic piece of furniture in your home—like a barnwood picture frame, mirror or end table? These weathered accents are truly one-of-a-kind, full of character and have history.

But over time, even the most well-loved pieces can get scratched or chipped.  When that happens, the raw wood underneath is exposed—and it often stands out against the beautifully aged finish you originally fell in love with.

So how can you fix it without ruining the look?

The good news: It’s easier than you might think.

Start by taking a piece of fine-grit sandpaper and gently smoothing the blemished area.  This helps soften any rough edges and prepares the surface for blending.

Next, grab a standard lead pencil and lightly shade over the exposed wood. Yes—a pencil.

It might sound surprising, but the pencil subtly darkens the raw wood and helps it blend naturally with the surrounding weathered tones.  The result is a quick, simple fix that restores the character of your piece without the need for stains or complicated repairs.

Git it a try – you might be amazed at how well it works!
